Chinese restaurant owner faces charges after police say he was beaten to death

A Chinese restaurant in Hong Kong has been slapped with criminal charges after CCTV footage allegedly showed an owner beating his own wife and daughter to death with a metal rod, the city’s local prosecutor said on Monday.

A 38-year-old man was arrested by police on Sunday and was being held in custody, the local prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The footage showed the man hitting his wife and then kicking her in the face before fleeing the restaurant, the statement said.

The man was also seen kicking his daughter in the head, it said.

It did not say how the man became involved in the attack, but the local prosecutors office said the woman was also injured.

“I think it is extremely important that this incident is addressed to the public and that it be handled appropriately and thoroughly,” the statement read.

The incident took place on Monday and was reported to the police on Wednesday.

The woman’s son, a 23-year old student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was taken into police custody after the attack.

He was charged with murder and attempted murder, the office said.

“The police have been investigating the case and have been able to find no evidence to support these allegations,” the office added.

Hong Kong has a reputation for having the highest murder rate in Asia.
